The companions that travel

Something I have noticed recently in the Doctor Who universe are the companions of the Doctor (specifically the actresses that act as them) have a cameo appearance in the season before.

For example, in Season 2 of the new series of Doctor Who, a member of the Torchwood team was Adeola Oshodi (played by Freeman Agyeman). Freema, whom joined the TARDIS team as Martha Jones in Season 3. However in Season 3, there wasn’t any new companions appearing then.

In Season 4 when Donna Noble (played by Catherine Tate) and the Doctor went to visit Pompeii, a mysterious Soothsayer was watching them. Karen Gillan (the Soothasayer mentioned) was Amy Pond, the Doctor’s last companion in Seasons 5,6 &7.

Can you guess who the next one is?? 🙂

I think there is a difference though, as when Colin Baker, Freema Agyeman and Karen Gillan first made appearances in the series it wasn’t known that they would go on to take leading roles, whereas Jenna-Louise Coleman’s appearances in ‘Asylum of the Daleks’ and ‘The Snowmen’ were always intended to be the start of a new story arc. She wasn’t in ‘A Good Man Goes to War’ though.

True, although Colin Baker became the Doctor (and not a companion). It’s interesting though.

I’ve heard who she is. She was in the story A good man goes to war, and now shows up in this years Christmas Special.

And in the classic series Colin Baker, later the 6th Doctor, appeared as a Gallifreyan guard called Maxil in the season before he took over the lead role and even shot the 5th Doctor played by Peter Davison!

Indeed, and so too is “souffle girl” in Season 7 to be the new companion. Perhaps there’s a pattern. 🙂
